D:Styles - Trance Styles

About

Here you will find trance mixes that I have done over the past several years. Previously, these mixes were done exclusively for my benefit, but once I submitted Vocal Megamix Vol. 3 to Digitally Imported and it was accepted I realized I should probably get a website to share these with anyone who wanted to listen to them. I obviously thought the mixes were quite good and I thought there might be others who would like them too. I originally started mixing because that's how I prefer to listen to songs (I think that a good transition can make both songs better) and I could never quite find a DJ that played what I wanted to hear so I decided to do it myself.

Over the years, I have developed several mix series based on the style/genre of the tracks. The main series are: Seasons, Club, Chill, and Vocal (with two others that are special projects). The Seasons series was the first to get started in the spring of 2007 (luckily it was spring when I decided to start these up so I didn't have a partial year haha) and the others developed over the next few years as needed. My favorite EDM genre has always been trance so all of the mix series are trance or a subgenre of trance. Therefore, not everyone will like every series, so if you don't like one series you should try one of the others. Expanded descriptions of each series are below.

Lastly, I must mention that all the mixes on my site will always be made available for free and that there should never be any ads here. Furthermore, it should also be noted that all songs and pictures used for album covers are the property of the respective artists and that all of my mixes are for promotional (non-commercial) use only. Enjoy the music :)

Seasons - These are the main mixes on the site and are put out each quarter, generally as 2 CDs. Since these come out much more often than any of the other mix series, these tend to include much more recent songs, whereas the other series may include songs a year old or more. The song selection is comprised of both vocal and non-vocal songs and can include songs that fit in any of the other mix series, but are basically my favorite songs of the previous quarter or so. I try my best to give all of these mixes as good of balance as possible between vocal and non-vocal (e.g., I don't want the first half of a mix to be entirely vocal and the last half to be entirely non-vocal) but sometimes that is dependent on the songs that are released recently. If you're new to this site this is where you should start listening.

Yearmixes - These mixes are all of my favorite songs from mixes released in a given year in megamix format (i.e., 40+ songs in a single mix with short transitions). These are by far my favorite mixes that I make and I like to think that, along with the vocal megamixes, they are this website's signature style of mix. The songs included are pulled from all of the mix series but the majority come from the Seasons series. I used to be concerned about only using songs released in a given year in that year's yearmix but I have since relaxed that standard to include any song in any mix completed in a given year. This especially needed to happen given that some series' queues can include songs over a year old and I realized it was stupid to exclude songs just because I didn't get to them soon enough. Due to the songs averaging 2 minutes or less, some people may feel that these mixes can be unintentionally intense. If that's how you feel I would recommend checking out the Chill or Vocal series as those mixes will be easier to listen to.

Club
- These mixes are probably the furthest from pure trance that I make. The songs included in this series of course have a trancy melody but they'll also feature a prominent bassline and may be technically House. However, the most important aspect of a song to me is its melody so know that every song will always include that. I also take great care to remove sections of any song that are crappy House filler nonsense. The Club series probably has the most intense average of any of the mixes. I like to think of these mixes as what I would do if ever performed live (which I don't).

Chill - To be clear, this is not Chillout; rather, this series is my attempt at a more laid-back style of trance. I don't really have a clearly defined criteria for determining if a song belongs in the Chill series other than the overall mood of the song. You can expect to find songs on the Chill mixes that are comparatively much more downtempo than any of the other series, but that still reach up to 140 BPM. For the majority of the early mixes the songs are predominantly non-vocal but starting with Chill Megamix Vol. 6 I tried to incorporate more vocal songs (often at the expense of the Vocal series). Speaking of megamixes, I made the decision in 2010 to turn this series into megamixes because I had too many songs in the queue and if I had continued with the regular mixes I'd be volume 20 by now and would still probably have 100+ songs still to be mixed.

Vocal - This series got its start when my mom started to express an interest in the songs I was listening to at home and I offered to make her a mix of exclusively vocal songs. I subsequently made 8 additional vocal mixes (not uploaded here) before I started to make them into megamixes, and they have since turned into my most popular mixes other than the Seasons series. I find this ironic considering that when I first started listening to EDM around 2003 or so I was vehemently opposed to any song with vocals and now it's my most well known series. Anyway, this series doesn't really need a lot of explanation: it's exclusively comprised of vocal trance songs in megamix format. If I like two remixes of a particular song I'll generally choose the one that's less intense for inclusion here (with the other usually going to the Seasons series) so this series is less intense than the Yearmixes as a result.

Forgotten Tracks - Have you even been looking through your library and saw a song that made you think: "I completely forgot about this song; how did this never find its way into a mix?" This series is for all the songs I rediscover, but don't quite fit into any of the regular series for whatever reason. These mixes are released as I accumulate the material, which can take several years for one mix so don't expect these on any schedule.

Trance Classics - I originally intended Volume 1 to be a way to include songs from before I started seriously listening to EDM (prior to 2005) and Volume 2 came about because I had too many songs to fit onto one mix. Therefore, there was never a plan to do any more in this series but over the past few years I have been contemplating doing one to cover the time that I've been mixing as a "Best Of" of the Trance Styles catalog. I actually started making one in 2012 but I quit after a few minutes because it just seemed superfluous since I already had all of the Yearmixes. I wouldn't entirely rule out one being released at some point in the future but the chance is remote at best.
